Moscow considered the events in the Karakalpakstan region an internal affair of Uzbekistan.
The RIA Novosti news agency quoted a source in the Russian Foreign Ministry as saying today: The events in Karakalpakstan are an internal matter and the situation is under control and the authorities are working efficiently and with respect for the people and the country has sufficient forces to prevent provocations.
Uzbek President Shavkat Mirzoyev declared a month-long state of emergency in Karakalpakstan after riots in the region killed 18 people and injured 243 others, according to a toll published by the Uzbek Prosecutor's Office earlier today.
