According to the US State Department, reporter Shireen Abu Akleh, who was killed in the West Bank in May, was probably killed by gunfire from the Israeli military.
However, forensic analysis of the projectile did not produce a clear conclusion because it was badly damaged, a ministry spokesman said in Washington.
According to the US investigation, the Al Jazeera journalist, who is well-known in the Arab world, was not hit intentionally.
According to the ministry, the investigation summarizes the findings of the Israeli and Palestinian sides.
The 51-year-old Palestinian-American journalist was killed in a fierce firefight between Israeli security forces and militant Palestinians during a raid in Jenin.
Israeli and Palestinian authorities blamed each other for the incident.
Uno came to similar conclusions
A few days ago, the UN Human Rights Commission reported findings that Israeli security forces are said to have fired the fatal shot.
"We have not found any information to indicate that armed Palestinians were active in the immediate vicinity of the journalist," said a UN spokeswoman in Geneva.
Al Jazeera had written that the reporter had covered the raid while wearing a vest with "Press" clearly written on it.
The broadcaster condemned the fatal shooting as "a heinous crime aimed at preventing media coverage".
Abu Akleh had worked for the Qatari broadcaster for more than 20 years.
The Palestinian was well known for her reporting on the Middle East conflict, especially in the Arab world.
