Brad Schneider, who sits in the House of Representatives for the state of Illinois, was in the city on Lake Michigan when the shots were fired.
"My team and I had just met at the beginning of the parade when the shots were fired," Schneider said on Twitter after he fled to safety.

Nancy Rotering, Mayor of Highland Park, has declared the Independence Day celebrations in her community over.
"We will provide further information as soon as it becomes available," the politician wrote in reference to the shots fired earlier.
