The Ministry of Education announced that it has approved the establishment of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) (HKUST (Guangzhou)), co-organized by HKUST and Guangzhou University.
The Ministry of Education stated that HKUST (Guangzhou) has high-quality educational resources, interdisciplinary construction and innovative talent training models, which are of positive significance for promoting the development of higher education and serving the construction of the Greater Bay Area.

Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) is legally managed by the Guangdong Provincial People's Government. The school will provide undergraduate, master's, and doctoral programs, which will be recruited through the state. Graduates will be awarded both HKUST and HKUST (Guangzhou) certificates.
HKUST (Guangzhou) and HKUST will promote mutual sharing of curriculum resources. If they meet the requirements of the two universities, students from the two places can study local subjects and degree programmes on the other campus.
In terms of faculty, the standard of HKUST (Guangzhou) will be the same as that of HKUST.
In addition, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) will adopt a new academic structure that integrates disciplines, with four "Hubs" (Function, Information, System, Society) and "Thrust" to replace the traditional academic structure of disciplines. Faculty” and “Departments” encourage interdisciplinary cooperation to solve problems that cannot be solved by a single discipline.
