According to the online tracking system Marinetraffic, the freighter came from the Russian coastal city of Novorossiysk.
However, the Russian-appointed head of the occupied southern Ukrainian region of Zaporizhia, Yevgeny Balizki, wrote to the Telegram news service that the freighter left the port of Berdyansk last Thursday.
The international community has been demanding that Russia allow the export of Ukrainian grain for weeks.

Ukraine-News: Putin refuses to congratulate the US on Independence Day
Out of anger at what he sees as anti-Russian US policy, Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin is not congratulating his colleague Joe Biden on American Independence Day this year.
"No, no congratulatory telegram will be sent this year," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Monday, according to the Interfax agency.
"That's because this year has become the culmination of unfriendly policies toward our country by the United States," he said, referring to the July 4 holiday in America.
"Therefore, under these circumstances, it can hardly be considered appropriate to send such a congratulatory message."
