Russian State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin stressed today that NATO bases in Finland and Sweden will not protect the two countries, but will endanger cities hosting military infrastructure facilities.
In response to the claims of the Finnish mayor of Lappeenranta, Kimo Jarva, that NATO bases will create a sense of security, Volodin was quoted as saying by TASS news agency: "The establishment of NATO bases will not make Finland or Sweden safer, but on the contrary, it will endanger residents of cities that will host military infrastructure facilities."
Volodin stressed that Jarva "is wrong. When military activities erupt, strikes will be carried out first and foremost against the hostile military infrastructure."
During its summit in Madrid, NATO officially invited Sweden and Finland to join it, and the alliance adopted a new strategic concept until 2030 that describes Russia as the main threat to its security.
Last Friday, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko considered the accession of Finland and Sweden to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization "NATO" as the worst episode in the development of European security.
