Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova reiterated her country's position that Bulgaria's politicized decision to expel 70 Russian diplomats from its territory "will not remain unanswered."
And the website of Russia Today channel quoted Zakharova as saying in a statement today: “The politicized decision of Sofia regarding the unjustified reduction of our diplomatic staff in Bulgaria, of course, will not remain without a reaction on a bilateral basis,” noting that the European External Action Service should understand that reckless support for anti-Russian actions By individual member states the responsibility for its consequences is the entire European Union.
Zakharova added that Russia may take retaliatory measures against the European Union for its support for Bulgaria's decision to expel Russian diplomats, noting that Sofia's action "is a step beyond the scope of diplomacy."
Zakharova stressed that if such an "innovative measure" is considered acceptable in the European Union, it is worth thinking about the principle of reciprocity on which diplomatic relations are based.
Earlier today, Russia reiterated, through its Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, its intention to respond to Bulgaria's expulsion of a number of its diplomats.
