Dr. Dori Gould, president of the Jerusalem Center for Public and State Affairs and former director general of the Israeli Foreign Ministry, said in an interview with the popular Moroccan newspaper L'Opinion that Israel supports Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara.
This is, among other things, for fear of Iranian progress in the Sahara following the close relations between Tehran and the Polisario organization, which demands independence for Western Sahara.
Things in this spirit were also said by Interior Minister Ayelet Shaked during her visit to Morocco about a week ago.
Morocco, which claims sovereignty over Western Sahara, a region rich in natural resources that was under Spanish control until the mid-1970s, annexed this territory after Spain left it.
The Algerian-backed Polisario Front simultaneously declared the establishment of an independent "Arab Democratic Republic" in Western Sahara, which was not recognized by most UN member states.
"Israel will support Moroccan sovereignty in the region."
