At least six people were killed yesterday (Monday) and another 36 were injured following a mass shooting that took place in a procession marking American Independence Day celebrations in Highland Park, a suburb of the city of Chicago.

Among the dead, two Jews and several others were injured.

The wounded were also evacuated to local hospitals.

The suspect in the act, Robert Crimo, known as "Bobby", a 22-year-old white man, was captured after a lengthy manhunt.

The age of the victims of the shooting ranges from only eight to 85.

Five of them were killed at the scene and one at the hospital.

Many casualties are hospitalized in critical condition.

A spokesman for one of the hospitals said at least four children had been shot.

A doctor who was at the scene and helped treat the wounded said that "people were immediately killed by horrific gunshot wounds. The bodies I saw, this is not a scene that can be easily digested if you are not a doctor."

Among the victims of the shooting yesterday were also Jews.

Jackie Sondheim, a member of the North Shore Congregation Israel Synagogue in Glencore, is one of six murdered in Highland Park, according to the synagogue.

"There are no words to describe the depth of our grief over Jackie's death," the synagogue said.

She worked in the synagogue as an events coordinator and teacher.

The synagogue wrote on the website that Sondheim will remember the kindness and endless commitment to the synagogue.

"She was an employee of the synagogue for years," it read.

"Her work, compassion and warmth have affected us all, from her early days as a Gates of Learning Preschool teacher to accompanying her in times of sorrow and joy in our lives"

"We know you join us in praying for Jackie's soul to rest in the shadow of God's wings and her family That huge. "

According to the synagogue, Jackie left a husband, Bruce, and a daughter, Lia.

Another victim in the shooting is Nicholas Toledo of Mexican descent, a grandfather and father of eight.

The shooting occurred during a July 4 parade.

The gala procession began at 10 a.m., United States time, and shooting there reportedly began just 10 minutes later.

One eyewitness told local media that he noticed a shooter opening fire at the crowd from the roof of a store, and that he heard dozens of shots.

"I was in a nearby suburb on my way to a holiday party and we heard gunshots nearby," Sagit Adler added to Walla!

"There was a great panic and everyone started running on the run to take cover. This is a very well-known suburb in northern Chicago and the population there is white, mostly a Jewish community."

She added that "I have been living in Chicago for 25 years. It is a very special holiday for very colorful, happy Americans. The atmosphere changed in a minute for fear, wonder and horror."

Debbie Glickman, a Highland Park resident who was among the marchers in the procession, said she noticed people running away from the direction she was walking.

"People were shouting, 'There's a shooter, there's a shooter,'" Glickman repeated in an interview with the Guardian.

"They just wanted to. There was mass chaos there."

She noted that she herself did not notice any casualties, but said she was shocked.

"it's so sad".

Another eyewitness, Alicia Kaufman, told a local TV channel: "Everyone ran, hid and screamed."

She said, "It was really scary. Very scary. We were very lucky, we ran away very quickly."

Another eyewitness said "people screamed and ran away, there was complete chaos".

Michal Schnovitz, one of the directors of the local Chabad center, was outside his building located in the heart of the parade route, because Chabad members had a table there that suggested to passers-by to put on tefillin or take a set of Shabbat candles.

She said that "the parade barely started and suddenly I see everyone running towards us," she repeated, saying that she immediately began urging people to take shelter in the Chabad center. The parade has a strong Jewish presence every year, with Chabad operating a cart with a giant menorah and providing additional Jewish experiences to the participants.

A local congressman who was at the parade offered condolences to the families and the murdered "My prayers for the wounded and for my community," he said.

"I will do everything I can to make our nation safer."

Defense Minister Bnei Gantz expressed regret over the shooting and said that "my thoughts are with the American people. I express my condolences to the families of the victims and wish a speedy recovery to the wounded. The people of Israel stand with you."
