INFOGRAPHIC - Tourists are returning to France after two difficult years due to the Covid-19 epidemic.

The trend is clearly improving for tourism in France.

Certainly, more buses stopped at the bottom of the main monuments or department stores of the capital, but it is enough to walk in the streets to find queues in front of the entrance of the main museums like the Louvre or sidewalks more frequented than these two last years.

Good news while some regions of the world such as China, some Asian countries and Russia are still absent subscribers.

Frustrated by two years of near-deprivation of travel, tourists have decided to respond even if the Covid-19 epidemic marks a new upward phase (200,000 cases recorded in 24 hours).

According to the tourist office, Greater Paris welcomed 12.1 million visitors (60% foreign), between January and the end of May.

This is 30% less than two years ago.

But the more the weeks pass, the more the decline is reduced thanks to more and more reservations, although often late.

The return of the Americans

According to a study conducted by the GfK institute for Visa* cards, foreign tourists have planned to indulge themselves for their holidays in France.

And more particularly, Americans who plan to spend an average of nearly 7,650 euros for a stay lasting almost ten days on average, knowing that 52% of this amount will be spent on site.

It is therefore a daily budget of 400 euros that they have planned to devote mainly to restaurants.

The 31% of the budget dedicated to leisure and cultural activities will be spent on catering, 15% on admission to historic sites and 15% on purchases.

Paris remains essential

The capital continues to be favored by tourists.

However, when they have other destinations on their programme, Marseille comes first, cited by 28% of those questioned.

Just behind come Disneyland Paris (27%), then Nice (26%), while Versailles and Lyon tied for fifth place in the ranking (22%).

As a reminder, tourist attendance in Greater Paris (the capital and the 3 departments of the inner suburbs) was 38 million in 2019 (all nationalities combined, including French), 12.3 million in 2020 and 18 million in 2021. The target is to cross the 33 million mark in 2022.

Popular cultural activities

For 40% of foreign tourists, the main objective of their stay in France is to visit historical sites and museums.

While Americans say they favor cultural activities, Belgians prefer relaxation and the outdoors, while the British tend to come to visit friends and family.

To get around, half of tourists plan to use the city's public transport, followed by the train, taxi and rental car.

Methodology:

The interviews were conducted online in May with people intending to travel to France in 2022, originating from the United States (810), the United Kingdom (811), Germany (806) and of Belgium (811) - i.e. 3,238 people in total, based on a questionnaire of 35 questions.
