Australian authorities today issued orders to evacuate nearly 50,000 people from their homes due to the intensification of floods and the rapid rise in the water levels in the rivers to a point that exceeded the danger levels.
Reuters quoted New South Wales Minister of Emergency Management Steve Cook as saying: “Nearly 50,000 residents have been requested to evacuate, mostly in the western suburbs. Rivers collecting waters are at their highest levels.
For its part, the Bureau of Meteorology said that the area of Windsor, west of Sydney, is witnessing a massive flood, the third of its kind in the region this year, while emergency teams are working to rescue those stranded and recover them from partially submerged vehicles.
Australia is vulnerable to severe forms of climate change, with devastating droughts and wildfires regularly as well as frequent and ever-increasing floods.
More than 20 people died due to floods and torrential rains in Australia last March.
