From a harmless cause like oxidation to mold, brown spots in the flesh of avocados can have multiple causes.

Munich – When you cut open the supposedly flawless avocado, you encounter them: unsightly, brownish spots that can appear near the skin but also inside the fruit.

There are many reasons why an avocado has brown spots.

It is important to store avocados properly, especially in summer.

But even if the fruit, which belongs to the laurel family, may look perfect when you buy it, unfortunately you buy the drupe without knowing what the pulp looks like.

Only when you cut it open does the avocado reveal its exact condition.

These are the most common causes of brown spots on your avocados:

  • If the fruit has already been cut, it will turn brown very quickly.

This happens because the avocado contains polyphenol oxidase, which reacts with air and leads to the brown spots in the flesh.

While this doesn't look pretty, this process doesn't make the avocado inedible.

You can avoid this if you sprinkle the fruit with lemon juice and rub it with the acid.

  • The fruit can also be overripe.

Then brown spots appear, similar to ripe bananas.

However, if the avocado tastes bitter or smells strange, you should discard it.

  • Wrong transport/wrong storage can also lead to discolouration.

Because if too much pressure is applied to the pulp, even the skin cannot completely prevent the damage.

  • Brown spots can also be a sign of a completely spoiled fruit.

However, the spots then appear together with mold.
