The axes of the workshop launched today by the Syrian Commission for Family and Population Affairs focus on the concept of gender equality and women’s empowerment and the definition of terminology related to its issues and the Convention on the Elimination of Forms of Discrimination against Women “CEDAW” at the Damaroz Hotel in Damascus.

Participants in the three-day workshop entitled “Building Capacity around National Women’s Mechanisms” will discuss the basic standards for addressing violence, how to prepare reports on gender equality and the sustainable development goals, and the mechanism for integrating a gender equality perspective within them.

The Director of Family Issues at the Commission, Rana Khalifawi, indicated that the workshop, which is being held in cooperation with the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia "ESCWA", aims to build the capacity of the Commission's staff and support their expertise on the national mechanisms concerned with women and how to prepare reports related to the implementation of the "CEDAW" Convention, which Syria joined in 2002. and the measures taken to achieve de facto equality between men and women in various fields.

Nada Barouza, Head of the Women’s Department at ESCWA, drew attention to the Commission’s role in supporting and developing the reality of women in Syria in various fields, in addition to creating a legislative environment that allows the establishment of empowerment projects for women to reduce violence against them, eliminate all forms of discrimination, and enhance their presence in society.

During the training session of the ESCWA advisory workshop on gender equality issues, Manar Zuaiter gave a presentation on the basic concepts related to women's issues in terms of defining gender, determining its standards and roles, stereotyping based on it, overlapping forms and discrimination related to it.

A number of participants in the workshop stressed its importance to support their experiences, as the Director of Population at the Authority, Elham Safi, considered it an opportunity to benefit from global experiences and raise the efficiency of workers to support and empower women in cooperation with various parties, while Medline Hassan, Head of Research and Programs Department at the Authority, saw that training and qualification develops communication skills and work efficiency, especially that plan

The Commission is currently focusing on monitoring the needs of women in proportion to reality.
