It has intensified this Monday afternoon to category 2. The states of Colima, Guerrero, Jalisco and Michoacán are on alert for "low danger", according to the most recent report from the National Meteorological Service, at three in the afternoon.

The cyclone, which had gone from a tropical storm to a category 1 hurricane this Sunday night, is moving parallel to the Pacific coast at 28 kilometers per hour.

In the states of Guerrero and Oaxaca, the authorities have suspended classes this Monday as a preventive measure.

The storm made landfall in Costa Rica on Friday.

During its passage through Central America, it left at least three dead, according to the AFP agency, and hundreds of displaced people due to the overflow of rivers, flooded houses and fallen trees.

Later, it continued its displacement until arriving this Monday at 290 kilometers from the Chacagua lagoon, in Oaxaca, and almost 370 kilometers from Acapulco, in Guerrero.

The phenomenon causes sustained winds of 150 kilometers per hour and gusts of 185, and waves of three to five meters on the coast of Oaxaca and Guerrero.

The National Meteorological Service has reported that the cyclone has a "rapid displacement" towards the northwest of the country.

The authorities anticipate that the passage of the hurricane will cause intense punctual rainfall in Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Chiapas and Veracruz.

In addition, it could cause flooding and landslides in the lower areas of these territories.

Due to these weather conditions, the authorities have asked for “extreme precautions” in these states.

In Guerrero, the State Secretary of Education has suspended classes in the institutions of the Costa Chica, the Costa Grande, Acapulco, the center, the mountains and the upper part of the mountains.

In Oaxaca, the state government has also closed this Monday the public schools of basic education in the municipalities of the coast, the Isthmus of Tehuantepec and the southern highlands.

The State Institute of Public Education of Oaxaca has asked directors, teachers and families to abide by the recommendations and avoid crossing bridges, rivers or streams, and avoid walking through flooded areas.

A month ago, Cyclone

Agatha

made landfall in Oaxaca, one of the poorest states in the country, causing at least 11 deaths.

The hurricane was the first of this season in Mexico and revived the controversy over the disappearance of the Natural Disaster Fund (Fonden), a trust that was destined for this type of emergency.

This fund was eliminated during the government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who assured in June that there is enough money to care for those affected by Hurricane

Agatha

(more than 35,000, according to official data).

The hurricane season in Mexico began on May 15, according to the National Water Commission (Conagua), and will end in November.

According to the forecast, this year there will be between 14 and 19 cyclones in the Pacific;

between two and five of these phenomena will reach categories 3, 4 or 5. In the Atlantic, it is expected that there will be between 16 and 21 cyclones;

between two and four will reach categories 3, 4 or 5. Scientists estimate that the season in the Atlantic will be "more active than usual", although "less active than in 2020", when 30 cyclones were recorded.
