No new members since 2019 - the Förderverein der Schongauer Mittelschule is dissolving

The support association of the middle school in Schongau is dissolved because no one can be found for the office.

What does this mean for the school community?

Schongau - Not only unusual, but also "a great pity" - the support association of the middle school in Schongau will be dissolved on July 31st.

Both headmaster Frank Pfaffenberger and the current chairwoman Susanne Tremer regret this.

“The reasons are constantly declining membership numbers.

We haven't been able to gain any new members since 2019, but we had around ten resignations a year," says Tremer.

For the past 39 years, the association has worked for the benefit of the students and the school community.

The majority of the members that the association still had had actually been there since the association was founded in 1983 “to support a good cause”, says Tremer.

For years we have been trying to find committed successors for the board of directors

"Of course, no class trips etc. were possible during Corona." That also probably contributed to the fact that no more members were found.

However, Tremer does not believe that the circumstances were decisive.

For years, efforts have been made to find committed successors for the board of directors.

Frank Pfaffenberger also confirms this.

“Unfortunately, we had to make the experience that the willingness for such an office is very low.

In my personal opinion, this is a problem that many clubs are currently struggling with," says Tremer.

Because neither new members nor a successor for the "elementary" post of chairman was found, unfortunately the only way left is to dissolve the association, according to the statutes, says Pfaffenberger.

That's a pity, because the association has supported many middle school projects in recent years.

“We were able to give financially weak students a good subsidy for school trips that were firmly planned in the school year,” says Susanne Tremer.

For example, when it came to language trips to England, school trips to Berlin and Croatia or the winter sports week.

The association also supported the opera project “Don Giovanni”, for example.

The school library got some new books, "we were able to give the school paramedics and tutors a little trip as a thank you."

Table tennis tables were purchased for the break.

Working materials for the German class, atlases, lunch boxes, class reading material and sets of football jerseys are to be purchased with the money that is still available.

Financially disadvantaged students should continue to receive support

Pfaffenberger cannot yet say whether there will be fewer trips in the future – without a support association, but he doesn’t think so.

The headmaster says that financially disadvantaged students should continue to find opportunities to take part in class trips.

Even if it means more work for the school.

In the future, it will always have to be checked on a case-by-case basis.
