2022-07-05T17:05:43.761Z

The question of access to abortion is a consensus among public opinion, according to an Ifop poll. Despite the recent revocation of the law in the United States, a majority of French people do not fear the Veil law being called into question.

The idea of including the right to abortion in the Constitution is shared by a large majority of French people.

According to an Ifop poll, 81% of them are in favor of this idea defended in particular by the deputy Aurore Bergé.

The president of the Renaissance group in the National Assembly told Franceinfo that a bill to this effect had been tabled on Saturday June 25, in reaction to the decision of the Supreme Court of the United States to revoke the constitutional right to 'abortion.

"

Women's rights are never acquired, even those that we think are irreversible

", justified the elected official.

However, unlike the American population, the question of the right to abortion is a consensus among the French, who do not believe in its possible questioning.

83% of French people consider the authorization of abortion to be positive by law

”, according to the Ifop study, i.e. sixteen points more since 1995.

A French consensus

This harmony even goes beyond the borders of political affiliations.

88% of Rassemblement National voters say they are in favor of abortion, for example.

However, "

a significant minority is against abortion

," explains Ifop in its report.

It is mainly made up of people from “

popular categories

” up to 25%, and especially 30% of individuals “

imbued with religious morality

”.

This liberal position favorable to the authorization of abortion has not always existed.

In September 1974, “

a few months before the vote on the Veil law, 48% of French

people” supported abortion.

Today, "

13% of those questioned think that this right should be subject to certain circumstances

", after a rape for example, and "

3% think that it should only be authorized in the event of a risk to the life of the mother

".

1% remains totally “

opposed in principle

”.

However, the polling company notes a paradox: "

if the French disavow the political leaders who have criticized the usefulness of the constitutionalization of this right, they do not fear its questioning

".

The number of respondents who do not believe in its danger in the near future (56%) "

has dropped significantly

", by eight points since 1995.

A social phenomenon

This consensus in favor of abortion is more broadly part of a phenomenon of “

increasing tolerance of the French on questions of morals

”, analyzes Ifop.

The French people are one of the peoples most attached to access to abortion.

In 2020, according to an international study, “

66% of French people thought that a woman should have the right to abort freely

”.

"

The highest rate after Sweden (76%) and the United Kingdom (67%)

".

In comparison, only more than one in three Americans (35%) were in favor of it.
