When Daniil Medvedev reached the top of tennis, his country, Russia, started the war against Ukraine.

The 26-year-old tennis player played in the Acapulco Open that February 24.

Since then, all Russian athletes have been excluded from the world's great competitions: from football to Formula 1. Medvedev has been no exception, regardless of the fact that he is at the top of the world ranking.

The mythical Wimbledon tournament, which these days enjoys the best tennis, prohibited him from competing.

Medvedev, one of Russia's sporting prides, has not taken a strong stance on his country's offensive against Ukraine.

"I have my own opinions and I talk about them with my family, with my wife, with whom I can discuss even if we don't agree and nothing happens," the number one said last March.

“Everyone knows what is happening, it is impossible to ignore it and people have different points of view.

I have always said that I am for peace,” he added.

On more than one occasion, the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, has praised the tennis player, such as when he won the US Open in 2021: "This is how the great champions play!"

Los Cabos, the tourist city in southern Baja California, has opened the doors for Medvedev to star in his tournament, to be held from August 1 to 6.

The last tournament in which the Moscow-born tennis player participated was in the Mallorca tournament, where he lost in the quarterfinals against the Spanish Roberto Bautista.

The last big one was Roland Garros, where he fell in the fourth round against Marin Cilic.

Medvedev's reign, however, is at risk.

In all of 2022, the Russian has not been able to celebrate victory in a tournament.

The Los Cabos Open, organized since 2016, will have a great face for the tournament for the first time.

The Argentine Diego Schwartzman, the British Cameron Norrie and Félix Auger-Aliasime will also join.

Last February, the Acapulco tournament managed to have Rafa Nadal, Alexander Zverev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Matteo Berrettini and Medvedev on the court, in one of the best editions of the event.
