L'Oréal-UNESCO for Women in Science in France honored Dr. Waad Saftali from Al-Baath University with the 2022 L'Oréal-UNESCO International Rising Talent Award for her research entitled (A Study of the Evolution of Galaxies throughout the History of the Universe).

Saftly’s research won, along with 15 other research papers worldwide, for the year 2022, among the approximately 260 PhD and post-doctoral researchers who won national and regional programs in the L’Oréal-UNESCO program, noting that Saftly had previously been awarded the L’Oréal-UNESCO Levant level for the year 2021.

Saftali confirmed to SANA reporter that honoring her constitutes a great incentive and motive for her to continue her scientific activity, expressing her happiness with this success, which she considered a success for the birth of Syria with scientists and researchers in the world, in addition to its contribution to raising the scientific classification of Al-Baath University globally.

Regarding the content of the research in which she participated, she indicated that the universe and its mysteries and how galaxies formed and evolved throughout history are among the most complex issues in modern astronomy, explaining that her research aims to better understand the physical processes that control the evolution of galaxies and establish new standards for the development of the next generation of cosmic numerical simulation models that are able to reproduce the observed properties of galaxies in the universe to a large extent.

Saftley used a number of the latest and most advanced cosmic simulation models to date, such as Eagle and Auriga, to create observational images of the resulting galaxies (that is, make them appear as observable through a telescope) by using the most advanced 3D radiation transmission code known as SCRT. It was developed with the participation of the researcher to compare these observational images with the real images of galaxies currently available.

In his turn, Dr. Abdul-Basit Al-Khatib, President of Al-Baath University, expressed the university’s pride in the researcher Saftali for this advanced scientific achievement, especially that the honoring by one of the most prestigious international awards, which in his opinion reflects the level of scientific research at Al-Baath University, which provides full support for research and for Syrian researchers with the ability to Achieving achievements and excellence in various aspects of life.

It is noteworthy that the honoring took place in France at the UNESCO building in Paris, in the presence of the heads of UNESCO and L'Oreal, ambassadors of the participating countries, scientific and humanitarian organizations, and distinguished scientific and social figures.
