No sport has been practiced in the sports hall on Josef-Boos-Platz for almost seven years.

First it was asylum accommodation, then a permanent construction site.

It should now be ready for the start of school in September - hopefully, because the hall is urgently needed.

Penzberg – At the most recent building committee meeting, Rodja Maier from the building construction department in the town hall reported on how far the general refurbishment of the gymnasium on Josef-Boos-Platz has progressed and assured: "It's progressing."

As for the interior of the building, the installation work is almost complete and the electrical work is well advanced.

The ceiling inside the hall is finished and all permanently installed sports equipment has been installed.

The balustrade for the gallery is being installed.

In addition, tiling and drying work is currently underway.

Outdoor work has started

Work on the outside area has also recently begun, says Maier.

Among other things, a new tartan track and a jumping pit will be built on the east side of the hall.

One of the next steps will be the construction of a new parking lot.

A meadow area will also be created.

The completion date for the start of school in September, which was envisaged at the topping-out ceremony in October 2021, is still the goal.

"We're trying to keep it up by the time school starts," Maier said.

But he can't promise that 100 percent.

Because in the course of the Ukraine war there are currently delivery problems with the required material.

Among other things, the sports floor, the material of which comes from Russia and the Ukraine.

In the course of inflation, there were also commissioned companies that were now demanding more money and threatened not to work otherwise, Maier continued.

"We're trying to counteract that." But the situation is not easy at the moment.

Material delivery problems

As already reported several times, the government of Upper Bavaria used the hall from June 2015 to March 2016 as an initial reception center for asylum seekers.

When the hall was to be brought back into shape, structural defects and insulating materials containing pollutants were discovered.

More damage followed.

In February 2018, it was initially assumed that the general renovation would cost around 5.6 million euros.

In autumn 2021 they had increased to an estimated 11.8 million euros.

In the building committee meeting, Maier corrected this number further upwards.

The current cost estimate is around 12.78 million euros, although this is only a "forecast", as Maier emphasized.

Because in the current situation of the Ukraine war, delivery problems and inflation, it is not possible to make any precise assessments.

In any case, it would be important for the schools and the Penzberg clubs to complete the gym as soon as possible.

It was only in spring that Michaela Schott, the first chairwoman of the TSV, spoke at the annual general meeting of an increase in the number of members - especially among children - and of waiting lists for existing sports offers.

She would therefore like to expand her club, but there is not enough space to hold practice sessions.

This space problem could at least be reduced with the opening of the sports hall on Josef-Boos-Platz.
