100 years war memorial Forstern: The warriors and reservists comradeship had invited to a commemoration event.

However, popular interest was disappointing.

Forstern

– The Forstern war memorial was blessed on July 2, 1922.

Almost exactly 100 years to the day later, the comradeship of warriors and reservists had invited to a commemorative event.

The speakers emphasized the importance of such monuments for peace work, especially today.

However, popular interest was disappointing.

At the commemoration on Sunday morning, community officer Manuela Steck represented Pastor Christoph Stürzer, who tested positive for the corona virus.

The Albachinger brass band played and the Tading firecrackers fired three shots.

Chairman Stefan Ganghofer looked back.

After the association was founded in 1921, it was soon decided to build a war memorial.

Money was collected from the citizens for this, but inflation struck.

According to the chronicle, the cashier at the time, Josef Oskar, helped out “by digging deep into his own wallet” because – unlike so many others – he had returned safely from the war.

Thus, on July 2, 1922, the memorial was blessed by Pastor Huber.

Remembering the fallen and missing of the world wars

"It was erected in memory of the 44 fallen and missing soldiers of the First World War, but also as a reminder to future generations that something like this should never happen again," said Ganghofer.

But this wish did not come true: During the Second World War, the municipality had to mourn another 45 dead and 14 missing.

"For many decades, until a few months ago, we were lucky to live in freedom and peace," said Ganghofer.

“Now we see images of violence, suffering and destruction on a daily basis.

That's why it's so important to remember, to commemorate and to admonish.” He emphasized that the task of the association is peace work and not the glorification of war, as he's often heard lately.

Maria Els, former district president, also responded to this.

D. and chairwoman of the district association of Upper Bavaria in the German War Graves Commission.

Many war memorials were erected after the First World War.

"They wanted to create a place of mourning, comfort and remembrance, because all too often the relatives didn't know where their loved ones were buried."

Inscriptions such as "They died in fulfillment of their duty" or "They died to protect their homeland" were intended to give meaning to their deaths.

This is precisely why there are also critical voices today, such monuments are "patriotic relics of bygone times".

"This monument is a memorial that calls us to keep the memory alive"

But the question of how a society deals with it is a question of how one deals with its history and the resulting responsibility.

In view of the millions of people who died in both world wars and countless civilian victims of violence, expulsion and persecution, there was only one answer: "This memorial is a memorial that calls on us to keep the memory alive so that war and tyranny never have a place." It is one Memorial that "calls on us to always stand up for the values of peace, freedom and tolerance".

The association wants to convey this message of peace by carefully and sensitively caring for the monument.

Steck also responded to critical questions to the warrior club: "What's that supposed to mean?

You glorify war." "No, a warriors' club makes sense, because it builds a bridge from yesterday to today and tomorrow.

He keeps the memory of the victims of armed conflicts alive and repeatedly urges peace," said the community officer.

In the subsequent service in the parish garden, she called out: “Let us all become peacemakers in this world!

Everyone where they are, at school, at work, in clubs.” The monument can also contribute to this, “if it reminds us of it whenever we walk past it”.

Chairman disappointed: attendance at the memorial event was very manageable

Mayor Rainer Streu thanked the association and everyone who had contributed over the past 100 years to the erection and preservation of the monument.

On behalf of the community, he invited all members to lunch - Streu had promised this last year for the club's 100th anniversary.

The visit to the memorial event was very manageable.

In addition to members of the camaraderie and the liturgical service, representatives of the local associations came with the flag delegations, but hardly any other citizens or municipal councillors.

Chairman Ganghofer was disappointed.

After all, it is not a club event, but one for all citizens.
