Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas and Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh met yesterday (Tuesday) in Algeria for the country's 60th Independence Day celebrations, to which they were invited.



The Algerian president, 'Abd al-Majid Taabun, managed to bring the two together who had not met for almost six years.

Despite the hostility between the Palestinian Authority and Fatah and Hamas, the two shook hands and were photographed together.

Their previous meeting was held in Qatar in 2016, when it was also attended by then-Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal, who today serves as Hamas leader abroad.

The rift between the Palestinian Authority and Hamas began in 2007, when the terrorist organization took control of the Gaza Strip, following Fatah's loss in the parliamentary elections a year earlier



. Last year, Abu Mazen announced the postponement of the Palestinian parliamentary and presidential elections, which were scheduled to take place for the first time since the outbreak of the conflict, to an unknown date, in a speech in April 2021.
