Because people are driving too fast and avoiding sidewalks, residents of Alpspitzstraße have called on the city to take action.

A one-way street is to be set up as a test.

Schongau – With a one-way street that is being set up on a trial basis, the building and environmental committee of the city of Schongau is responding to a request from residents of the Alpspitzstraße who complained that vehicles in oncoming traffic simply switch to the level footpath, which leads to dangerous situations.

But one-way street is not the same as one-way street.

Martin Keßler, head of the citizens' service in the city of Schongau, presented three different variants at the most recent meeting of the building committee.

In all of them, "cyclists would be free," explained Kessler.

That makes sense, and the road conditions would allow it.

Eventually, option one won over most councillors.

The variant provides that the northern Baumrissstraße (from the junction to Tränkhaldenweg) becomes a one-way street.

"I wouldn't do that," Kessler said at the presentation.

Because all residents of Forchet V, which after all comprises around 130 residential units, would have to bypass the Säulingstrasse.

One would produce a “big detour”, according to Kessler.

He also warned that motorists who actually wanted to drive into Alpspitzstrasse would have to turn around through Tränkhaldenweg.

Most of the committee members saw it differently.

"Säulingstrasse is better developed," said Stephan Hild (UWV).

And "the 130 households will not all drive there at the same time," added Ilona Böse (SPD).

Variant two: A “fake one-way street”

Thomas Schleich (UWV) found it "not okay that everyone was taken down one street".

That's where the next proposal would probably come from, he feared.

Instead, he leaned toward variant two.

This provided for a "false one-way street" from the Baumrissstraße/Alpspitzstraße intersection.

Motorists heading north must turn right onto Pürschlingstrasse.

The special feature of a "fake" one-way street: above the intersection, traffic is allowed in both directions.

That would also be an advantage for the residents of the northern Alpspitzstrasse, according to Kessler.

In principle, he would like variant two, says Stephan Hild.

The hurdle to driving into the northern Alpspitzstraße despite the ban is low.

The police also pointed this out, according to Kessler.

"You would have to stand right next to the sign during a check." Nevertheless, one should not "per se assume that the sign will be disregarded".

In addition, there should be "social control", according to Mayor Falk Sluyterman.

"The people who live there and demanded a one-way street will be careful." That's how Kornelia Funke (CSU) saw it.

However, Ilona Böse advised against it: "You quickly get in a bad mood." A clear specification would be better.

Stephan Konrad (SPD) agreed that one cannot expect local residents to control the situation.

Variant three: The northern Alpspitzstrasse with one-way traffic

Variant three provided for a one-way regulation on the northern Alpspitzstraße.

Means: It may only be driven in a southerly direction.

Consultation was held with the police inspection, said Kessler.

"You have a negative attitude to all three variants." The reason: There is no particular risk situation that would justify a restriction of traffic.

In fact, not a single accident was documented in the affected area.

In addition, Kessler warned: Although they can be ordered, it is unclear whether a one-way regulation will also hold up in court.

"Anyone affected could take legal action."

The city's intention is that there will be no accidents in the future, according to Sluyterman.

You have to take a preventive approach.

"During the on-site visit, we experienced live how criminal driving is going on there."

The majority (five committee members) voted for variant one.

There were three votes for the second.

The third variant had not convinced anyone.

In order to be able to see whether the one-way street brings the desired success, one must give the citizens time to change their habits, as the experience in the old town shows, according to Kessler.

He proposed a one-year probationary period, which the committee agreed to.

"August to August," says Sluyterman.
