Acqua Sant'Anna, the largest European producer of low mineral content waters - one and a half billion bottles a year - has stopped the production lines of carbonated products due to lack of carbon dioxide.
"Co2 is nowhere to be found and even all our competitors are in the same situation. We are desperate, it is another very serious problem that is added to the record increases in raw materials prices and the drought that is impoverishing the sources", says Alberto Bertone, president and administrator delegate of Acqua Sant'Anna, the Vinadio (Cuneo) company.
The difficulty in finding carbon dioxide for food products had already arisen at the end of last year - Bertone recalls - "but we were able to stop what is now reappearing in the form of a real emergency, which affects all European producers. .
The Co2 companies explain to us that they prefer to allocate production to the healthcare sector
, we would be willing to pay more for it even if it was already very expensive but there was no way of making our suppliers change their minds. So - concludes Bertone - the sparkling water risks running out: once the stocks of supermarkets and discount stores are finished, there will be no more bottles on sale ".
