Seven charges of first-degree murder were filed today (Wednesday) against Robert "Bobby" Crimo III, the shooter at the Fourth of July parade two days ago in the affluent suburb of Chicago, Highland Park.

Illinois Attorney General Eric Rinehart said if Crimo is convicted, he is likely to receive a life sentence without pardon.

He added that he is expected to face additional charges before the end of his interrogation, and that he will seek to keep him in custody until he is brought before a judge later today.

A massacre in Illinois killed at least seven people, including a Jewish woman, and 36 wounded were evacuated to hospitals, according to Mayor Nancy Rutering.

Ruttering said the community of 30,000 people is still in shock from Monday's attack.

"This tragedy was not her need to reach our doorstep," she told NBC News.

"As a small town, everyone knows someone who is directly affected by it, and of course we are all still shocked," she added.

The suspect in the act, Crimo, a 22-year-old white man, was captured after a lengthy manhunt for him.

Investigators of the incident revealed that he may have planned the attack "for weeks" and wore women's clothing during the shooting to hide his identity and his face tattoo.

Ruttering said she knew the suspect when he was a little boy in the Scouts and she was an instructor.

"What happened? How did someone become such an angry and hateful person?" She wondered.

She added that the shooter's semi-automatic rifle was legally purchased.

"Our nation needs to hold a hearing on the events of these two weeks in which dozens of people were killed with legally obtained weapons," she said.

While Illinois police were in the midst of the pursuit of the shooter from Highland Park, the United States National Rifle Association (NRA) did not drop a tweet in honor of the Fourth of July stating that "the only reason you are able to celebrate Independence Day is because there are armed civilians."

The tweet was not removed even while locals had to hide for hours.

Another tweet from the Gun Owners of America lobby group was in a similar vein.

"This long weekend was held under the auspices of armed civilians," the tweet read.

Illinois State Sen. Darren Bailey, the Republican nominee for state governor who was also backed by former President Donald Trump, said during the shooting incident in the video that people "should move on and celebrate this nation's Independence Day!".

The video shows people waving Bailey's campaign flags as he asked to pray for the families of the victims.

After strong criticism, Bailey's office released a statement saying "I apologize if I underestimated the pain our country is feeling today. I am heartbroken by the tragic events and the pain and loss felt by so many. I intend to pray for the victims and those affected by the tragedy," it said. .

According to the Gun Violence Archive, Monday's shooting was the 15th in the year in which at least four people were killed in the United States.
