Hospital patients with limited mobility need the help of nurses for eating, bathing, and even urinating.

One of the winners of the HA Outstanding Staff Award this year, Wei Bijuan, a service assistant in the internal medicine ward of Tung Wah Hospital, was originally a hospital cleaner. Her long-term contact with patients has made her deeply interested in patient care, and she is determined to study as a patient service assistant while working. certificate, eventually becoming a ward service assistant.

She took care of and encouraged a stroke patient to recover, and witnessed the patient's recovery from being unable to move half of his body to the point where he was discharged from the hospital with crutches.

In the face of the turbulent fifth wave of the epidemic, Bijuan joined the isolation ward after she was diagnosed and recovered, and used her own experience of infection to comfort every uneasy confirmed patient.

The bitterness of working in the isolation ward is indescribable. Bijuan said that she insisted on a belief: "With a heart of compassion for the patients and doing meaningful things, I successfully overcome the psychological difficulties."

Bijuan, 51 years old this year, was introduced by a friend to Tung Wah Hospital in 2013 to do cleaning work. During the process of contacting patients, she gradually became interested in patient care, and in mid-2014 she studied for the certificate of patient service assistant.

Bijuan said that at that time, she was working and studying at the same time. She often worked in the morning and went to school in the evening. She basically attended classes during the holidays. "I didn't take a day off for several months."

The work has to deal with the "disgusting" nature of the patient's excrement

At the end of 2014, she "graduated" to become a patient service assistant. She has been working in Tung Wah Hospital for nine years. She has served in the infirmary and rehabilitation departments of the internal medicine ward for many years. In the rehabilitation department, she mainly takes care of stroke patients.

Since most of the stroke patients cannot move half of their body or the whole body, the nursing staff take care of feeding and bathing, and it is common to clean up the patients' bowels and stools, and from time to time they have to accept the abuse of the doctors and nurses from the patients because of their discomfort. There is "disgust".

Bijuan said that the process of taking care of the patient's funeral was very torturous, because the long-term care relationship was very close, and the sudden death of the other party made her sad.

The joy of witnessing patient improvement day after day Unfit for shifts at first

Bijuan's motivation for many years is not only the support from her family, but also the joy of witnessing the recovery of the patients she takes care of every day.

She shared her work moments, pointing out that when she first started working, she was not used to the shifts where day and night were often reversed. "Qin closes at 11 o'clock in the evening, and now opens at 7 o'clock. After opening at 7 o'clock, it may be necessary to return to the night and receive 7 o'clock the next morning."

Stroke patient can't move, depressed mood, patient comfort, and finally recovering

She said that the most profound thing she saw was a patient in his 70s who was unable to move half of his body due to a stroke, and his speech was slurred. Exercising made him feel even more depressed. Bijuan comforted him with all her heart, and used the rehabilitation of a patient in a nearby hospital bed as an example. The patient finally plucked up the courage to work hard for rehabilitation, and his speech returned to normal. , "Seeing that he is getting better and better every day, I am so happy and moved."

Bijuan: The process of taking care of the patient's funeral and praying for the deceased to leave with dignity

The work of the hospital is always inseparable from the separation of life and death. Bijuan said that the process of caring for the patient's funeral is very torturous. Because of the close relationship of care for a long time, "I have feelings when I am in a relationship." It made her sad. Fortunately, her colleagues comforted each other. She also understood that helping the deceased clean their bodies was to allow them to walk the final journey with dignity and slowly overcome their psychological difficulties.

Once diagnosed and recovered, they join the isolation ward

At the beginning of this year, the fifth wave of the epidemic broke out in Hong Kong, and the medical system almost collapsed. Many wards of Tung Wah Hospital had to be converted into isolation wards.

Bijuan said that it was not easy at all to transfer most of the patients who had been bedridden for a long time to other hospitals and help them clean up.

She said that around late February, she was also unfortunate enough to contract the virus. After recovering in about a week, she immediately went to the isolation ward to take care of the patients. When I return to my body, I will be sweating.”

Bijuan's enthusiasm and caring work attitude are more infectious to the family around her.

She said that her daughter may have been inspired by herself. She also joined the nursing industry a few years ago, and is now working as a physiotherapy assistant in Tung Wah Hospital. "Mother and daughter" fight side by side: "It was a surprise that both of them insisted on joining the profession."

Bijuan won this year's Hospital Authority Outstanding Staff Award. The nominee was Lin Shan, manager of the internal medicine ward of Tung Wah Hospital. Lin Shan said that although Bijuan was restrained and not good at words, she cared for patients with love and never felt that there was anything wrong with taking care of patients hard. In particular, I am also impressed.

She said that Bijuan shoulders the heavy responsibility of leading new people in the hospital, and hoped that her excellent psychological quality can be passed on.
