After a two-year break due to corona, the youth group of the Starnberger Kolpingbühne is performing a play again this weekend and next.

Originally, "The Little Witch" was intended as a film project, now the children are showing the work of writer Otfried Preussler in the Catholic parish center.

Starnberg – Tonight the main rehearsal of the new play “The Little Witch” by the youth group of the Starnberg Kolping Stage will take place.

"We are really looking forward.

It's finally starting again," says Barbara Schwab, head of the youth group.

Due to the pandemic, the children and young people have not been able to perform a play since 2019.

The enthusiasm was all the greater when it became clear that rehearsals and games could take place again this year.

26 children and young people part of the play

Since May 9, the students have been working on the script for "The Little Witch".

The drama enthusiasts have met two to three times a week over the past two months to rehearse the play perfectly.

"There was always only a part of the children and young people there - depending on which scene we were rehearsing at the time," says Schwab, who founded the youth group 29 years ago.

A total of 26 students between the ages of eight and 20 are taking part.

The majority are girls.

"But boys are also very welcome," emphasizes Schwab.

In contrast to other clubs or cultural institutions, the youth group of the Starnberg Kolpingbühne had less to contend with the corona pandemic and its consequences.

“Hardly anyone dropped out here.

The children and young people who took part two years ago are still there.” In the spring, five new students were added.

"The demand is there," says Schwab.

In order to take part in the youth group, those who are interested should come from Starnberg, be able to read and write and "not have to go to bed at 6 p.m. because rehearsals always take place in the evening," says the director.

Membership in the Kolping Family is not necessary for the first introductory play.

The project was originally planned as a film

The youth group prefers to perform classics, while Schwab prefers to keep his hands off modern pieces.

In addition to "Aladdin and the Magic Lamp", "The Sams" and "Beauty and the Beast", the students have also rehearsed "The Jungle Book" - however, the premiere had to be canceled at short notice in March 2020.

“Everything was ready, but the lockdown came the day before,” remembers Schwab.

Performing the play, which is already well known to the children and young people, was out of the question for the leader of the group.

"It's not for the summer.

It's incredibly hot under the animal costumes.” The choice fell on “The Little Witch”.

When it became clear that no performances would be possible in 2021, Schwab came up with the idea of making a film.

"We wanted to reenact the work of Otfried Preussler in the forest." However, the project failed due to the technology.

"So we're moving it to the stage now," says Schwab, who is also active in the Starnberg Kolping Stage for adults, who are showing the comedy "Everything on sick leave" this year.

Rehearsals for this started yesterday.

Tickets for “The Little Witch” are available on Saturday, July 9th from 3 p.m., Sunday, July 10th from 3 p.m., Friday, July 15th from 5 p.m., and Saturday, July 16th from 3 p.m.

July, from 3 p.m., are available via www.kolpingbuehne.de and at the box office.
