Unterallgäu – Next Friday, July 8th, the famous "Herkomer competition" will stop in Mindelheim.

The historic automobiles from before 1930 can also be seen in other places in the district.

In 1997 the oldest touring car rally in the world was relaunched in Landsberg, from July 7th to 10th it will celebrate its 25th anniversary.

The venerable vehicles that take to the track here bring the history of the automobile to life.

Around 60 participants have registered.

After the Herkomer competition had to be postponed twice due to corona, everyone involved is now all the more pleased that it can take place again in the anniversary year.

What makes the Herkomer competition so special is the age of the vehicles.

None may be younger than 1930. Even from the oldest vehicle class A defined by the World Classic Car Association FIVA (year of construction up to 1904), four participants are registered, including a De Dion Bouton from 1902 with eight hp and a top speed of 27 km/h and one Oldsmobile from the USA (also built in 1902) with five hp.

For the first time this year, drivers can choose between four routes – two longer and two shorter.

Because the oldest of the vehicles in particular would not be able to cover a 140-kilometer circuit.

The routes lead to the Allgäu in the direction of Buchloe-Marktoberdorf, or to Swabia, in the direction of Mindelheim and Türkheim, but also in the Ammersee area/Oberland area through the villages of Inning, Herrsching and Raisting.

Valuation tests – practical tasks, assessment questions and the like – are completed along the way.

The Herkomer competition is not about speed.

The winner is the one who crosses the finish line with his vehicle under his own power and has collected the most points in the special stages.

Where the vehicles can be seen on Friday in Unterallgäu: The vintage cars roll into the district at Dirlewang, Apfeltrach and Gernstall at around 10.45 a.m.

At 11 a.m., special stages and a presentation will take place on Mindelheim’s Marienplatz, followed by a lunch stop at Mindelburg with castle tours.

It continues at 1:45 p.m.

The rest of the route then in the district: Oberkammlach/Unterkammlach/Westernach/Nassenbeuren (1.55 p.m.), Mattsies/Rammingen (2.18 p.m.), Türkheim (2.35 p.m.) and Amberg (2.42 p.m.).

Completion on Saturday in Landsberg

The traditional highlight and conclusion of the rally is the presentation of the vehicles on Landsberg's main square, which is expected to attract a large number of spectators (Saturday, July 9, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.).
