IRONMAN Hörmann stopped by a bad fall in Roth – Scheumaier best WSV starter
Roth/Bad Tölz – The beacon of hope did not finish because of a bad wheel crash, but another triathlete from WSV Bad Tölz surprised: Michael Scheumaier finished the Ironman Roth in 9:13.33 hours and was 100th in the overall ranking.
Andreas Posch, who recently started the Frankenman over the long distance (we reported), finished in 10:03.45 h.
"My body rebelled a bit, two Ironmen in quick succession, he probably took it amiss," says Posch.
Markus Hörmann, who had a good chance of being within reach of the leading group after swimming, had to get off after a fall shortly after switching to the bike.
"Most of all, I'm happy and grateful that nothing more happened to me after the fall from hell," says Hörmann, who said goodbye to South Tyrol for three days after he - without fractures -
3.8 km of swimming, 180 km of cycling and 42.2 km of running were on the program for the athletes from WSV Bad Tölz in Roth, Middle Franconia.
The competition is one of the most traditional and best-attended European events over the long distance.
The winner of the men's race was Magnus Ditlev from Denmark in 7:35.48 h, and Anne Haug of Germany was the first to finish the women's race in 8:22.42 h.
Hörmann would have had a good chance of getting involved at the front as well.
"I was as fit as I've ever been, had bomb values in training and felt super good." Immediately after the start, Greilinger stayed in a front swimming group, switched to the bike together with Sam Long (USA), who later finished sixth.
"We agreed to work together on the bike course and maybe catch up with the leading group after 40 minutes,"
But it didn't get that far.
A bottle on the road at an aid station.
Hörmann dodged to the left.
Wanted to steer back.
But the front wheel slipped away.
"And I hit it head first." At 40 things.
The result: bruises everywhere.
A cut above the right eyebrow.
"It was a brutally bloody affair." Hörmann was later able to assess the forces at work by looking at his completely dented helmet.
"I've been really lucky."
That is why his gratitude to his guardian angel prevails.
But Hörmann also knows that a top result would have been possible.
"I would have, dad i, i was - none of that counts for anything," admits the 31-year-old.
"But the conditions were right, I was heading towards a good result."
Hörmann is now worried about his completely destroyed racing machine.
"The carbon may have broken, I have no idea how I'm going to contest my next race." Because of the cut above his eye, he has to go two weeks without swimming anyway.
But in three weeks Dresden is on the agenda.
"I hope I get some support for a new bike."
The results of the Tölzer:
Michael Scheumaier, 9:13.33 hours, 100th place overall, AK 30 26th place (swim: 1:01.02/bike: 4:54.57/run: 3:13.27 hours);
