Placemark: Donetsk, Eastern Ukraine
Smoke rises over Donetsk.
Ever since the Russian army declared the Luhansk region completely conquered, it has been shelling Donetsk, the other province in the Donbass, heavily.
Impacts can be heard all the time.
Some residents still try to maintain a kind of everyday life - even if it now consists of miles of footpaths.
Ivan, resident of Donetsk:
»The buses don't run anymore, the overhead lines are broken because they're shooting at us all the time.
Shelling and more shelling - those bastards.
They do it on purpose to scare people.
You see, this is how their war works: shoot, keep shooting.
And even that is not enough for them.«
Placemark: Lysychansk, Luhansk region
In Lysychansk, where the focus of the fighting was recently, calm has returned.
Russia completely took over the city on Sunday, it lies in ruins.
100,000 people once lived here.
Those who remained, their number is unknown, are slowly venturing out of the bunkers again.
Tatyana Gluschenko, resident of Lysychansk:
»My family and I have not gone anywhere.
All in all, I could not guarantee my children 100% safety anywhere in Ukraine.
The whole of Ukraine is under fire: the west, the center, Dnipro, Kyiv, everything.
So we decided not to risk our lives fleeing, but to stay here.
The main thing is at home.«
Placemark: Sloviansk, Donetsk region
Some have also stayed in the neighboring region of Donzek.
Just like Yuriy Sherbakov and his son.
Now her hometown of Sloviansk is also the focus of Russian attacks.
After impacts nearby, their yard burned down, shrapnel hit him in the face.
Yuriy Sherbakov, Sloviansk resident:
»We sat there and counted the rockets flying past, there were definitely twenty in this direction.
But when they fly towards you, you don't hear them.
Just before impact, there's a hiss, then a bang.
You can hear real cannon bangs.«
At least one bullet hit a market hall in Sloviansk.
According to Ukrainian sources, two civilians died and seven others were injured.
Russia still denies shelling civilian targets in Ukraine.
