The battle for Labor leadership: Three candidates will try to challenge Michaeli Israel today

2022-07-06T20:42:04.398Z

The current chairman is expected to win • The secretary general of the party strives to oust - and work for connections with the center

Just before the end of the race, when it seemed that Merav Michaeli would remain the sole candidate, the battle for the Labor Party leadership began.

"Israel Today" is making order in the primaries for the leadership and list of the Labor Party, with all the new and old candidates.

Merav Michaeli

The incumbent party chairman and transport minister has a high chance of being the second since the 1980s to win twice in a row in the party's leadership race.

Michaeli is known to insist on a list with gender equality, denies connections with Meretz or with other parties and strives to promote the work of being back to a ruling party.

She recently tried to woo Gadi Izenkot to run alongside her.

Michaeli tried with all his might to keep the change government in check without any problems for the coalition, and she is criticized in left-wing circles - especially from Meretz - for not fighting issues that were explosive in front of other elements in the coalition.

However, Michaeli recently fought with Michael Bitton over the "equal way" reform she promoted in public transportation.

Eran Hermoni

The secretary general of Labor and a veteran figure in the party. Announced a confrontation with Michaeli for the party leadership. Hermoni has always been considered an opposition to Michaeli. Hermoni wants to work for great connections with the center, and even if elected he will not lead the list to the Knesset, but will work to reserve first candidate for the Knesset in the Knesset, another candidate with a high public stature, such as Izenkot

Other anonymous candidates who announced their candidacy are David Landsman and Yaron Gadot.

Along with the election of the party chairman to be held on July 18, the date for the primaries for the list has not yet been set. It now appears that the primaries for the list will mainly include the names of the incumbent MKs.

Amar Bar-Lev

Finished in first place in the last primaries for the list.

It has been a difficult year in the Ministry of Internal Security with a period of terrorist attacks and many media crises, but in the party it is still appreciated.

Abtissam Maraana

Chairman of the Special Committee for Foreign Workers. Despite the public outcry with her entry into the Knesset and her past remarks, she has emerged as a pragmatic MK committed to the party's path.

She also knew how to conduct herself in accordance with the faction's position on explosive issues for Arab society, unlike MK Zoabi of Meretz, and for that he is appreciated by the party.

New candidates

Among the new dates on the list so far can be found Col. (Res.) Raz Karni and former chairman of the journalists' organization Yair Terchitsky.

Another person who will stand for election is publicist Gil Beilin, who ran for the party presidency for the previous time and in the primaries for the list came in ninth place.

Israel Today has also learned that those who are considering running for the primaries are former MKs Yoel Hasson, Stav Shafir, Revital Swede and even strategic adviser Ronen Tzur - but at the moment none of them have announced an official run.
