The Ilion massacre: The shooter who carried out the shooting on American Independence Day in Highland Park today (Wednesday) admitted his actions in a police investigation.

Six people, including two Jews - a man and a woman - were killed in a massacre in a parade in Illinois this week.

At least 30 people were injured and evacuated to hospitals.

Highland Park police have arrested 22-year-old resident Robert Crimo on suspicion of involvement in the incident.

The name of one of the dead, Nicholas Toledo, 72, a Chicago resident who arrived at the scene with his family who wanted to watch the parade, was announced.

Toledo was a cripple who needed constant care.

Also during the day, it was made public that Jenny Sondheim, a preschool teacher in the Israeli community in a nearby suburb, was also killed in the shooting.

The community recounted: "Her work, kindness and warmth touched us all. She was among us in moments of joy and sorrow, with tireless devotion."

The gunman climbed onto the roof of a nearby store and randomly fired at spectators at the parade.

Six were killed and at least 24 were injured.

On the roof, police found "evidence of firearms."

Eyewitnesses present at the scene say they heard gunshots during the parade and police dispersed the crowds.

"Suddenly I saw people fleeing down the mountain without the blankets and chairs, just running away," an eyewitness said.

A local reporter said he saw at least five people with blood and a man covered in a blanket.

The place from which the shooting apparently took place,

US President Joe Biden said he was "shocked" by the violence, adding: "There is still a lot of work to be done in the arms reform, and I do not intend to give up on the war against the gun violence epidemic."

Prime Minister Yair Lapid said: "It is very sad to hear the news from Highland Park, where a day of celebration has become a day of tragedy.

My thoughts are with the families of the victims and the entire American people.

Today, as always, Israel stands with our American friends. "

Highland Park's Independence Day celebration also includes a display of Chabad's giant menorah, attracting thousands. The Jewish community is now trying to pick up the pieces and try to deal with the new reality. "There were more people in the synagogue last night than usual, because people felt the need to Together, to strengthen each other, "said Rabbi Meir Shimon Moskowitz, the Chabad emissary in Chicago.

"We are here to strengthen our community. We are all one family."
