(CNN) --
Sen. Tammy Duckworth told CNN she was at the Highland Park emergency operations center when police told the mayor of the discovery of a 2 1/2-year-old boy orphaned in the mass shooting of this Monday near Chicago.
"He was pulled from under his father, who was still bleeding, by good Samaritans," the senator said.
"Then they went to treat his father because his leg was still bleeding," Duckworth told CNN's John Berman on Wednesday.

Kevin McCarthy, 37, died protecting his son, Aiden, the boy's grandfather, Michael Levberg, told the Chicago Sun-Times.
Levberg's daughter Irina, 35, McCarthy's wife and Aiden's mother, was also among the seven people who died while watching the parade.
"His father did everything he could to protect his son and he succeeded," Duckworth said.
