Residents of Peitinger Strasse and Friedrich-Haindl-Strasse are critical of the plans to set up a roundabout and truck parking spaces there.

This was shown at a citizen information meeting.

Schongau – The citizens came to the Ballenhaussaal well prepared.

Some took notes while the plans were being presented, others had already written down questions and criticism about the project to redesign Peitinger Strasse and Friedrich-Haindl-Strasse.

"You'll notice that we're going to fight back," a resident said to Mayor Falk Sluyterman at the public information event after Sebastian Dietrich and Martin Blockhaus from the city building office had presented the plans and the debate had begun.

Criticism of planned truck parking spaces

According to the current plan, 13 truck parking spaces plus a sanitary facility are to be built next to the access road to UPM.

"How does that match the ISEK?" asked a local resident.

There it is said that goods are increasingly to be brought onto the rails.

And elsewhere that the townscape should be embellished, greened.

He is also in favor of getting more goods onto the rails.

Ultimately, however, there will always be truck traffic, says Sluyterman.

And the vehicles would have to be parked somewhere reasonable.

It is true that neither the municipality nor the company UPM are responsible for this - but the problem has arisen here.

The plans were presented to the residents of Peitinger Strasse.

A roundabout with an exit to UPM is planned.

In terms of the townscape, it is the task of land use planning to resolve alleged conflicts.

"We are grateful that UPM is there and it is a good sign when investments are made at the site," said the mayor.

The land on which the parking spaces are to be built belongs to the paper mill.

There are already "at least 30 spaces for trucks" inside the plant, but they can only be used until 9:30 p.m., a resident criticized why the truck drivers couldn't stand there.

That is only partially correct, explained Markus Messmer from UPM.

All trucks would be given loading windows - during this time they would be allowed to stand there.

The problem: You can't control the "external workers".

Hence the pitches outside.

The company has its own property directly opposite the planned parking lot, so it is important to ensure that there is reasonable noise protection, says Messmer.

Helmut Hunger, responsible for construction matters at UPM, added that in the course of the redesign of Peitinger Strasse there was now the possibility of creating the parking spaces.

There have often been complaints from other parts of the city.

And the residents of Peitinger Strasse have already had “trucks parked in front of the window”.

The situation should be improved for everyone.

It still has to be checked whether the plans can be implemented at all and whether there may be a time limit on the use of the parking spaces.

Roundabout worries residents

The state building authority in Weilheim is planning a roundabout for Peitinger Strasse, with a turnoff towards UPM.

But it was "dangerous," according to a local resident.

Because, coming from Peiting, it is partly hidden behind a house and cannot be seen as a roundabout.

In addition, the arc is too weak and does not have to be slowed down.

The roundabout corresponds to the one in Marktoberdorfer Straße, according to Sluyterman.

One citizen suggested pushing the roundabout further west towards Wirtschaftsweg.

So you would be further away from the houses.

However, this would probably mean that three to four truck parking spaces would be lost.

You can pass it on and check it again, says Blockhaus.

Citizens were also concerned that the roundabout had to be permanently brightly lit at night.

You can work with LEDs, and an expert opinion and compliance with legal requirements are also necessary here, Blockhaus said.

The noise in Peitinger Strasse should decrease because noise-reducing asphalt is used and it is no longer necessary to brake and start at traffic lights.

Cycle paths and speed - residents hope for improvement

There were also comments on cycling.

Currently, there are regularly tricky situations when residents "feel their way out" of their driveways in their cars, while cyclists race in both directions on the sidewalk and cycle path, explained several citizens.

There will be bike lanes on both sides of the street.

According to Blockhaus, the goal is that traffic only travels in the direction of travel.

A local resident wished that there should be a selective check so that this could be done.

The crossing aid at the end of the town, which is intended for cyclists, should also be built wider so that road traffic is slowed down at the same time.

Another resident agreed and suggested permanent speed displays – “What is available in Peiting must also be possible in Schongau.”

Opportunity to comment on the project

Nothing is set in stone yet, as Blockhaus and Dietrich pointed out in their presentation.

All concerns will be taken seriously, Sluyterman concluded.

Even if he does not advise it - if there is any doubt as to whether everything went correctly, the residents could initiate a judicial review via a norm control procedure.

"We as the administration know that too, which is why we will not plan against the law." As part of the land use planning, public bodies and citizens are also allowed to comment twice on the project.

All statements are checked and, if necessary, incorporated.

Construction could begin in 2023, Blockhaus said when asked.

"But I assume that's a sporting goal." The project has already been postponed because of a lack of money.
