The military add another seat of power.

Vice Admiral Carlos Ignacio Velázquez Tiscareño has been appointed this Thursday as the new director of the Mexico City International Airport (AICM), the main air gateway to the country.

The sailor replaces Carlos Morán, whose management has been marked by controversy.

In recent months, users have reported flight delays and the neglect of the saturated facilities.

In addition, several incidents of aircraft that have had to abort the landing have been reported.

The Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport has reported in a statement that the transition has begun this Thursday.

Complaints about the quality of care at the AICM have become a constant.

In mid-May, two planes had to take flight as they were about to land because another aircraft was occupying the runway.

The dissemination of videos of the events raised a wave of concern among travelers and led the government to force the departure of the director of Navigation Services in the Mexican Air Space (Seneam), the body responsible for air traffic controllers.

Now it's the airport director's turn.

Carlos Morán was Undersecretary of Transportation before being appointed head of the AICM in January with the mission of "revitalizing" the operation of the airport.

Just a few days ago, the official warned of the saturation of the facilities and the delay of flights caused by this situation.

“Whoever insists that the AICM is not saturated is wrong.

We are not well, we have many delays and a high season is coming, ”he declared in an interview with the specialized media

The appointment of a military man to replace Morán is not surprising.

The Secretary of the Navy was already in charge of the security of the AICM and six other airports since February, replacing the National Guard.

Previously, the Administration of Andrés Manuel López Obrador also entrusted him with security at seaports.

“It is not militarizing, it is reinforcing surveillance in ports, (…) the support of a fundamental institution of the Mexican State is required,” the president justified at that time.

The intervention of the Armed Forces has characterized López Obrador's management in almost all areas, including aeronautics.

The Navy has not been the only beneficiary of this trend towards the militarization of public life.

The Secretary of Defense built and currently operates the Felipe Ángeles International Airport, the alternative to the battered AICM.

And another soldier, General Carlos Antonio Rodríguez Munguía, heads the Federal Civil Aviation Agency.

Velázquez Tiscareño is a retired aviator pilot, with a long career in the Armed Forces as head of aeronautical squadrons, he also has a career as director of aviation facilities in various government agencies.
