Christian Lindner marries his Franca Lehfeldt on Sylt at the weekend.

Because well-known guests like Chancellor Olaf Scholz come, the costs for taxpayers are immense.

Not everyone likes that.

Munich/Sylt – It is the dream wedding of German politics in the summer of 2022: Federal Minister of Finance Christian Lindner (FDP) is marrying TV journalist Franca Lehfeldt (Welt) on the holiday island of Sylt.

The 43-year-old Rhinelander and the 33-year-old Hanseatic have been a couple since the summer of 2018.

In a three-day celebration marathon, the two will exchange vows twice this weekend, starting on Thursday (July 7).

And because several cabinet members of the traffic light federal government are present at the church wedding in St. Severin Church on Saturday (July 9), the wedding will take place under the highest security precautions.

For example, Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD), Vice-Chancellor and Economics Minister Robert Habeck and Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (both Greens) are on the guest list.

Because of the high density of German government responsibility, the district of Keitum on the North Frisian island is cordoned off.

According to media reports, snipers secure the site, and top politicians are brought from A to B on Sylt in armored limousines.

It is unclear - at least publicly - whether the members of the federal government will also be present at the celebration after the wedding in the luxury restaurant "Zanzibar" in the south of the North Sea island.

Either way, the whole security effort is likely to cost taxpayers a lot of money.

The comedian Ilka Bessin (known as Cindy from Marzahn) clearly criticized this circumstance, thereby triggering a debate as to whether such state expenditures for a politician wedding are justified in times of inflation, galloping energy prices and the Russia-Ukraine war.

"I'm just reading the invitation list for Mr. Christian Lindner's wedding.

Many important guests are coming.

Congratulation.

I just don't understand why we have to pay the security forces with our tax money," writes Bessin in a post on Instagram, addressing her 229,000 followers: "I'm not invited either.

If I celebrate my birthday now, will he come and open the door?

Quick question for you?

Which of you is invited???”

Finally, Bessin turns to her fellow comedian Mario Barth in her post.

"This is a case for: Mario Barth reveals...", writes the 50-year-old from Brandenburg, referring to the program of the same name by the 49-year-old from Berlin, in which wasted tax money is the topic.

What the protection of Lindner, Scholz and colleagues should ultimately cost has not yet leaked out.

In any case, the issue is a sensitive one.

Wedding of Franca Lehfeldt and Christian Lindner: Debate on the cost of security precautions

A comparison: Most recently, a dispute broke out between the state government in Munich and the federal government because of the G7 summit in Bavaria.

The costs for the security precautions at the meeting of the heads of state and government of the seven largest democratic industrial nations were initially estimated at 188 million euros.

The Free State is now demanding compensation from Berlin - so far in vain.

The costs for the wedding event of Franca Lehfeldt and Christian Lindner on Sylt should not be that high.

Still, the celebration polarizes before it even begins.
