The British Broadcasting Corporation revealed that Prime Minister Boris Johnson will resign as head of the ruling Conservative Party, following a series of resignations that rocked his party and government.
The body said that Johnson, who has become isolated and powerless, will resign as Conservative leader today and will continue as prime minister until next fall, adding that the party leadership elections will take place this summer and the winner will replace Johnson by next October.
The Prime Minister's spokesman said Johnson would make a statement later today.
Johnson was until yesterday struggling to stay in office, despite a growing rebellion within the Conservative Party against his leadership and the number of resignations from his government and his party exceeded fifty.
First-ranking ministers joined Johnson's call for his resignation due to the difficult situation, including Home Secretary Priti Patel, and newly appointed Education Minister Michelle Donlan joined today's resignations, saying Johnson had "put everyone in an impossible position."
Opposition Labor leader Keir Starmer had called for more resignations to pressure Johnson, saying those who remained were "blindly obedient and defending the untenable".
