There had never been a comparable wave of government employee resignations in British history.
Johnson survived a no-confidence vote by his party earlier in the year.
Now the pressure from within his own ranks has apparently become too great even for the head of government.
The outgoing prime minister plans to address the nation later today, and candidates to succeed him are already lining up.

More and more hunger

Against this background, the association calls for richer countries to assume greater responsibility.
Secretary General Mathias Mogge told the
Rheinische Post
: "It is essential now to react quickly to the dramatic effects of inflation and price explosions and to provide humanitarian aid that does justice to the dimensions of the crises and saves lives." Wars, climate change and the consequences of the Corona pandemic amplify the emergency.
Food prices are also rising in Germany, but the situation in other, poorer regions of the world is even more dramatic.
Mogge explained that millions of people worldwide are "chronically malnourished".
In his estimation, the world community has not reacted to warning signs and has initiated insufficient investments in poor countries, for example in rural development.
According to the UN, the number of starving people rose to around 768 million last year – around 46 million more than in the previous year.
G20 foreign ministers meeting: US rules out bilateral talks with Lavrov
No bilateral talks
: Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will also be present at the G20 foreign ministers' meeting.
The reaction of his US counterpart Antony Blinken is eagerly awaited.
The latter has already stated that he will not meet with Lavrov for bilateral talks.
Meanwhile, the US State Department is not ruling out that the US Secretary of State could leave the room when Lavrov takes the floor.
The Federal Foreign Office recently said that Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) would also not meet Lavrov separately.
