Officer Derek Chubin, who murdered George Floyd while leaning on his neck for 9 minutes during a May 2020 arrest attempt, was sentenced to 252 months in prison (21 years) in federal court.
The court reduced the sentence to seven months due to the time Chauvin ran in solitary confinement in prison.
Shubin, 46, has pleaded guilty to two separate charges - denying Floyd's rights and failing to provide medical care during an arrest - and has been a lecturer for 22 years.
The two sentences will run concurrently and Chauvin will be transferred to a federal prison.
"George's life is important," Floyd's brother, Philons, told the court on Thursday and asked the judge to impose the maximum sentence of 25 years.

George Floyd,
Before the verdict, Chauvin turned to Floyd's children and said he "wishes them the best in their lives and that they will have good guidance so that they can become great adults."
Judge Paul Magnusson told Chauvin before sentencing: "You must be held accountable for your actions."
Recall that the murder was filmed by passers-by and went up on social media - something that provoked outrage around the world and a wave of demonstrations calling for an end to racism and the use of force by the police.
As part of the plea deal, Shubin also admitted to violating the rights of a 14-year-old African-American boy during another arrest that took place in 2017.
