Chaos reigns at the airports: Two couples from the Munich region are also affected.

They have to deal with canceled flights and fight questionable refunds.

Munich Airport – A trip to London, including an ABBA show and food from star chef Yotam Ottolenghi: That was the plan of Marcus Schlaf (54) and his wife Kati (56).

Above all, our newspaper's photographer is looking forward to the concert, "which is supposed to be unbelievable".

For their flights at the end of July, the couple paid 300 euros for two people in January, there and back.

But then the message came from Lufthansa: The return flight from London to Munich is cancelled.

Flight frustration in Germany: waiting for suitcases at the airport for more than two hours

The alternative offer: a flight from Dresden to Munich.

“But how do I get to Dresden?” the man from Oberhaching asks himself.

At first no one answered this question.

Not only the Schlafs are currently struggling with flight cancellations: Due to the lack of staff, there are many flight cancellations and chaos at the baggage carousel.

At Frankfurt Airport, passengers now have to wait up to two hours for their suitcases.

By the way: everything from the region is also available in our regular district Munich newsletter.

In Munich, 3,000 transit suitcases could not be delivered directly because the employees were overworked.

"Sometimes a suitcase arrives here from Amsterdam that we have nothing to do with," says Edgar Engert, spokesman for Munich Airport.

Nevertheless: currently 87 percent of the normal staff are working off 75 percent of the original traffic.

The couple Ulrike Hohl (54) and Giancarlo Bottiglieri (60) recently had to struggle with Lufthansa:

Chaos at Munich Airport: flights are canceled – questionable reimbursement from Lufthansa

Last weekend, the people of Munich wanted to fly to the Italian island of Ischia for a birthday party.

The way back was planned separately: As a teacher, Hohl had to be back in Munich on Sunday, her husband was not supposed to fly back from Rome until Wednesday.

By the way: everything from the region is also available in our regular Erding newsletter.

Both paid just under 200 euros for their flights.

Three days before departure, the two received the message that their outbound flight was cancelled.

They could have taken the return flight, but since they couldn't make it to the birthday party, they declined the offer.

Although the facts are the same for both of them, Lufthansa reimburses Hohl for the total price of their flights, while her husband only gets 30 euros.

Julia Zeller from the Bavarian consumer center advises: “In such cases, be persistent.

In this case, the airline must refund the money in full within seven days.” Anyone who is informed of the cancellation less than seven days before departure is usually entitled to a so-called compensation payment.

However, this only applies if the airline is responsible for the cancellation itself.

"If the security staff at an airport is missing or the trip is canceled due to a storm, the airline can't help it," explains Zeller.

Chaos at the airports: consumer center gives tips

While Hohl and Bottiglieri are still trying to get a full refund, after waiting for more than an hour on the telephone hotline, there was a little relief for the Schlafs: the flight offer from Dresden to Munich was a computer error.

However, Lufthansa offers the couple a return flight a day later.

Still, Schlaf is annoyed because of the extra night in London.

Lufthansa does not accept this.

He can't do anything about it.

Lufthansa informed the couple in good time – namely 14 days before departure.
