High inflation puts pressure on people with low incomes in particular.

A retiree moved to a campground because she could no longer afford the cost of her home.

Magdeburg – According to the Paritätischer Gesamtverband, poverty in Germany has reached a record level.

In 2021, the poverty rate had risen to a high of 16.6 percent.

According to this, 13.8 million people in this country must currently be counted among the poor, 600,000 more than before the pandemic.

According to the association, a further deterioration in the situation is to be expected due to high inflation.

In addition to rising food and energy prices, higher rents are also putting pressure on people on low incomes.

Families, Hartz IV recipients and pensioners are particularly affected.

House too expensive: pensioner has to move to a campsite

Some can no longer even afford the roof over their heads they used to have because they no longer have enough money: Pensioner Viola H. moved to a campsite near Magdeburg because she would have to pay for her house after her death her husband could no longer afford.

"With a pension of a little more than 600 euros and maybe 150 euros from the employment office, you can't keep the house.

Yes here," the pensioner explains to RTL.

The plot on which the pensioner has been living for a few months costs around 1,000 euros a year at the campsite, including water and waste disposal.

Viola has almost 40 square meters available there.

According to RTL, around 30 people live at the campsite all year round.

Site operator Doreen Hauke told the broadcaster that she was getting more and more requests for her permanent campsites.

"I have a few who say: I'll scrape together all my dollars and just get a caravan or a living module," explains the site operator.

Rents are rising faster than last year

Permanent campsites are apparently in greater demand.

Meanwhile, the situation on the rental markets remains tense: According to the rental compass of the real estate company immowelt, asking rents in many major German cities have risen more sharply this year than in the previous year.

The reason for the increasing price dynamics is, among other things, the sharp rise in construction interest rates.

As a result, buying real estate is becoming more and more unrealistic for many people and the tense rental market in many places is additionally burdened by the increased demand.
