Long-Covid patients may experience extreme fatigue, shortness of breath, and pain over a long period of time.

They are often absent from work as well.

Munich – Anyone who becomes infected with Corona can continue to suffer from certain symptoms for a long time afterwards.

This phenomenon is called Long Covid, which can occur after both a severe and mild course.

Complaints are generally considered Long Covid if they persist for more than four weeks after infection.

Post-Covid patients, on the other hand, suffer from symptoms longer than twelve weeks after infection and are therefore restricted in everyday life.

As an analysis by Techniker Krankenkasse (TK) showed, affected long-Covid patients are often absent from their job for longer periods of time.

The results were calculated using the data of all 4.3 million workers aged 15 to 64 who were continuously insured with TK from 2019 to 2021.

Corona: Long-Covid patients have long absences from work

Long-Covid patients often suffer from pain, shortness of breath and extreme fatigue.

After a corona infection, they are sometimes on sick leave for more than 100 days.

Persistent states of exhaustion, shortness of breath or pain: These are just a few of the many symptoms of long-Covid disease that affect those affected and that can certainly resemble those of diabetes.

A current study by Techniker Krankenkasse shows the long-term effects of a corona infection on sick leave among employees in Germany.

It is true that these longer-lasting symptoms initially only account for a relatively small proportion of absenteeism from work.

However, the employees are absent for a long time.

While every person insured with TK was reported unemployed for an average of 14.6 days in 2021, some of those affected by long-Covid had more than 100 days.

According to the results of the analysis, of the employees insured with TK who were found to have a corona infection using a PCR test in 2020, only just under one percent were on sick leave in the following year due to Long Covid.

On average, however, they stayed away from work for 105 days with a doctor's certificate.

Even patients with a mild course who then suffered from Long Covid had an average of 90 days absent.

Long-Covid patients who had to be hospitalized for more than seven days due to their Covid-19 disease were on sick leave for an average of 168 days in 2021.

Patients who needed ventilation were sick for an average of 190 days.

Long Covid: Long-term consequences not foreseeable

"The analysis shows that anyone affected by Long Covid has had to deal with this disease - which still puzzles us - for a long time," explains Dr.

Jens Baas, CEO of TK.

According to Baas, the number of long-Covid patients, who usually only have 50 percent of their old performance, seems relatively low at just under one percent, “but these are only the patients who have also been on sick leave with this specific diagnosis - we also assume a high number of unreported cases.”
