During a virtual audience with Queen Elizabeth II, the new German ambassador to Great Britain, Miguel Berger, presented his credentials.
Berger traditionally drove to London's Buckingham Palace in a royal carriage, from where he was connected to the monarch via video.
In a short personal conversation, the diplomat thanked the Queen for her commitment to friendship and reconciliation between the United Kingdom and Germany, the German Embassy said.
Berger, who was born in 1961, was previously Minister of State in the Federal Foreign Office and has been in his new post since May.
One of his first appointments was the Queen's 70th Jubilee celebrations.
"The close, cooperative and diverse relationships between the United Kingdom and Germany are not a matter of course," said Berger.
He wants to do everything in his power to care for them.
The 96-year-old Queen mostly stays in her Windsor residence near London because of her mobility problems that have been going on for months.
However, the monarch will soon have an important date: at the latest when the Conservative Party has elected a new party leader, Prime Minister Boris Johnson will visit the Queen and ask for his release from office.
Soon after, the Queen will nominate Johnson's successor - the 15th Prime Minister of her term.
