A few hours after British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced his resignation today (Thursday) - a political source told Israel Today that "relations with Britain are at an all-time high."
He said, "This is also because of Boris Johnson who was a true friend of Israel and a personal friend of Lapid, but not only. Israel has a number of members in Britain's leadership today. The two countries share common values and interests, and the Israeli Foreign Ministry has excellent relations with the ministry. "As part of this context, Prime Minister Lapid and British Foreign Secretary Liz Tras have formulated a strategic plan to promote bilateral relations."
"Britain is expected to pursue a relatively rigid policy towards Iran"
As stated, the assessment in Israel is that the change of Prime Minister in the United Kingdom will not affect the good relations with Israel.
Britain in general, and the Conservative Party in particular, hold positions sympathetic to Israel, and on the Iranian issue British policy is considered relatively rigid.
When the original nuclear deal was formed, it was Britain that sent the United States to "assign amendments" to improve the restrictions and oversight imposed on Iran, and even today the British hold the position that the agreement should be renewed, but in an improved version.
All candidates to replace Johnson from the Conservative Party are considered to have positions sympathetic to Israel and are expected to continue a relatively rigid policy vis-à-vis Iran.
The fact that some of them are of Muslim descent is considered insignificant, as they all maintain good relations with Jerusalem and have over the years expressed clear support for Israel.
