Retired bus "Rebirth" turns into a book corner on campus to promote reading to children with intellectual disabilities

Driving a bus into a school was originally a picture that would only appear when you "hit a phone", but recently, a bus actually appeared in a school in Shatin.

Shatin Public School is a special school for children with mild intellectual disabilities. Due to the serious shortage of classrooms, students' reading promotion activities are affected.

The school applied to KMB for decommissioning the bus, and planned to convert the bus into a reading promotion space.

KMB has also donated retired buses to Shatin Public School at the end of last month through the Old Bus and Retired Bus Donation Scheme.


The old bus and retired bus donation program started at the end of 2016, donating retired buses to non-profit-making organizations for recycling. The donated vehicles include single-decker and double-decker buses. Applicants are required to submit a proposal that details the purpose and needs to meet sustainable development. Request, Shatin Public School also applied earlier.

In order to promote reading, the school plans to convert the lower deck of the bus into a relaxing and comfortable book corner and reading area, so as to cultivate students' habit of reading and enjoying reading.

The upper deck of the bus is expected to be converted into a multimedia learning center, equipped with the latest electronic whiteboards, providing a comfortable learning space, and inspiring students' potential through STEAM education and other creative courses.

The school will also hold a bus body design competition to invite students to participate in the design of the bus exterior and develop their artistic creativity.

KMB hopes to continue serving the people of Hong Kong in another way through the decommissioned buses repurposed for education, and at the same time achieve the purpose of recycling resources. This donation also allows the school to develop unlimited creativity and inject new meanings into the old buses.
