A new hiking trail has just been inaugurated in Wartenberg, now it's the turn of the new forest nature trail.

Wartenberg – In 2018, the then mayor Manfred Ranft took the first steps towards a forest nature trail after a larch stand above the Schrader-Velgen-Ring was ready to be cut and harvested accordingly.

The idea came from Franz Gerstner.

Now the path is complete.

At the inauguration, Ranft's successor Christian Pröbst thanked his predecessor for starting the small official act: "A great thing."

Ranft was visibly impressed by what has become of the idea from back then.

The forester of the forest owners' association (WBV), Susann Schröker, provided the planning service.

"She had the training for it, and then it makes sense," said WBV district chairman Rainer Mehringer praising her to the local newspaper.

The association has contributed twelve trees, there is funding from the government of Upper Bavaria.

Mehringer: "Today's children often know 20 car brands, but not five tree species."

Vice President Walter Baumann from the Marie Pettenbeck School explained that the 9th graders had achieved a lot.

They have designed additional display boards with bird species and other animals, including bark beetles, and provided QR codes so that anyone with a smartphone can get more information.

Pröbst spoke of an "open-air classroom".

Together with the children we went on the circular route, Baumann presented the boards designed by the students.

At one point the children could compete with the animals in terms of jumping distance.

The building yard had lovingly designed everything, which earned extra praise from the boss.

Because there is a playground next to it, Pröbst sees the nature trail as ideal for hiking days.

For Mehringer, however, it has another function: "The area has been enormously upgraded ecologically." There are many boards on the trees, naming the species and providing further information.

The diversity of species in this comparatively small area is enormous.

When asked by the local newspaper whether the market could book this area on the eco account, Pröbst spontaneously had to pass, but then thought it was worth considering.

“We would have to check that, we are working on the topic at the moment.” The market sponsored buttered pretzels, drinks and sweets for the children, with the pretzels receiving the most attention.

Only when the mayor started walking around with the box did the children grab the candy.
