The Uruguayan Ministry of Health reported this Thursday that it will appeal the decision of a judge who ordered to suspend vaccination against covid-19 for children under 13 years of age.

In a statement, the Ministry indicated that, due to this ruling, the injections for that group will no longer be available until further notice and that the inoculation plan continues for those over 13.

Judge Alejandro Recarey ordered the "immediate" suspension until, among other conditions, all purchase contracts for these vaccines are published.

He also required the same for all documents attached to the contracts, especially those that detail the composition of the substances to be inoculated.

The magistrate thus responded to an appeal for protection promoted by a lawyer who expressed his distrust of the components of the vaccines.

The Uruguayan government has reiterated that the decisions made in this regard were based on scientific evidence from different institutions.

“Vaccines are effective and safe, they managed to reduce mortality and infections, they are a mechanism to protect the life, health and integrity of people,” they indicated in a statement.

Uruguay is the first country in Latin America where doses against covid-19 were applied to children under 18 years of age.

Vaccination against this disease is not mandatory in the South American country.
