Vampire killing kit sparks auction battle

2022-07-07T16:24:31.756Z

Sold more than six times its estimate, the box dating from the 19th century has panicked buyers around the world.

The object of curiosity attracted, on June 30, bidders from all over the world as well as from France, the United States or Canada.

But it was an Englishman, who remained anonymous, who won the auction.

The amazing 19th century kit, supposed to kill vampires, was sold for 13,000 pounds, or nearly 15,700 euros.

This box belonged to Lord William Malcolm Hailey, an English aristocrat, who served as administrator of British India.

For the owner of the auction house, Hansons Auctioneers, Charles Hanson,

"whether out of fear or fascination, it is interesting to know that a member of the highest aristocratic social order, a man with a place in the House of Lords, acquired this object

,” he told CNN.

The mysterious kit includes crucifixes, holy water, a stake and its mallet, rosary beads, a bible, brass candlesticks, as well as a pair of pistols and a powder flask, to fight the vampires.

"The task of killing a vampire was extremely serious, and historical accounts suggested the necessity of special methods and tools,

" said Charles Hanson.

Objects of religious significance, such as crucifixes and bibles, were said to repel these monsters, hence their presence.

Will this briefcase find its place in a collection of unusual objects or will it be used for a great vampire hunt?

The mystery remains but Hansons Auctioneers says:

'Belief in vampires, an undead creature said to need human blood to survive, dates back hundreds of years and persists in some parts of the world today' today."
