Geneva-Sana

The World Health Organization revealed today that more than 6,000 confirmed cases of monkeypox and three related deaths have been recorded worldwide since the beginning of this year.

The organization said in a statement that it had detected 6,027 confirmed cases of monkeypox, noting that the number of infections had increased by 77 percent until the twenty-seventh of last June.

She explained that for the first time she recorded a local transmission of monkeypox in newly affected countries in Africa and the world without epidemiological links.

In turn, the Director-General of the World Health Organization (Tedros Ghebreyesus) said in a press statement that he remains concerned about the size and spread of the monkeypox virus.

He pointed out that Europe is the current epicenter of the disease outbreak, with more than 80 percent of cases recorded worldwide.

The organization recently called for urgent action to curb the outbreak of monkeypox, against the backdrop of a threefold increase in the number of infected people two weeks ago on the European continent.
