St. Ottilien – Those who approach the Archabbey from the west these days will already see it glowing in the green from afar – the blue and yellow circus tent on the monastery meadow.

All around, there is still a lot of work and rehearsing going on, so that everything is in place before the premiere of the Circus St. Ottilien on July 15th.

"We're very feverish and don't sleep through the night anymore," says circus director Martin Metz.

The Circus St. Ottilien is a mammoth project that the students and teachers of the Rhabanus-Maurus-Gymnasium are putting together with the monks of the monastery.

Every three years since 1991, it has been "Free the Manege" for self-developed and rehearsed numbers, with Corona recently forcing a four-year break.

Erzabt performs with rap and "Black Brothers".

Now everyone involved can hardly wait for things to start again, especially as there is a small anniversary coming up - it is the tenth Circus St. Ottilien.

More than 600 people have been busy preparing for the ten-day festival throughout the school year.

The upper school students took over the entire organization - there is no P-seminar that does not deal with the circus.

16 performances are planned, for which a total of 52 numbers were rehearsed - a huge pool of attractions, about half of which can be seen in each performance.

We have been rehearsing twice a week since the first half of the year to catch up on the Corona period, during which we could at best practice at home.

Two animal numbers with dogs were only rehearsed at home, says sports teacher Kirsten Heithoff.

As a special highlight, the head of the monastery also traditionally appears in the ring.

Archabbot Wolfgang Öxler wants to perform a "revival rap" and, according to his own statements, is even thinking about getting a tattoo for the occasion.

He will also make music together with Abbot Primate Notker Wolf and brother Otto Betler as "Black Brothers".

Other Events

For the first time, the students also built the fairground booths themselves, 31 in number.

Games and culinary delights are offered here, announces the teacher responsible for the fair, Veronika Lehmann.

There is so much on offer "that you can stay here all day".

In addition to the performances, other events will take place in the tent and on the site, including the Benedictus Festival on July 17th, which will be crowned in the evening by the donation gala "Scheine für Steine" in favor of the planned new school building.

A quiz is planned with four guessing teams consisting of teachers, students, monks and celebrities, including TV comedian, presenter and musician Wigald Boning.

His wife Teresa, ex-Ottilian, daughter of the former Latin and religion teacher Gerhard Tieschky and award-winning soprano, will provide the musical framework for the evening.

Viewers can place their bets on the guessing teams and win a scenic flight over St. Ottilien and the Five Lakes Region as the main prize.
