In Austria, the police caught a couple who are said to have manipulated the speedometers of used cars - up to 200,000 kilometers disappeared.

Krems an der Donau (Austria) – The lack of chips is currently causing long waiting times for new car buyers – Mini USA, for example, is now sending customers on the waiting list jigsaw puzzles to pass the time, even used cars are scarce and expensive.

But even apart from the current delivery times for new cars, used cars are generally an attractively priced alternative for many – after all, new vehicles lose value rapidly in the first year or two.

However, if you buy a used car privately, caution is advised.

This is now shown by the case of a couple from Austria, who apparently turned massively on mileage before selling the car again.

The alleged fraud was exposed by a traffic control - as it turned out, the HU sticker of the car of a couple from Lower Austria was fake.

However, further police investigations uncovered other illegal activities by the duo.

As the officials report, the suspicion that the 64-year-old and his 63-year-old wife manipulated the mileage of the used cars they sold primarily via an Internet platform was confirmed.

A total of 22 cars have been registered on the two since 2012.

Ultimately, police were able to "attribute" the couple the completed sale of eight and the attempted sale of one used car, where the odometer readings had been manipulated.

As "heute.at" reports, the duo apparently turned back the speedometer clock on an Audi by 200,000 kilometers.

The two therefore preferably traded in vehicles from the brand with the four rings and Škoda.

Couple is said to have massively manipulated mileage - damage amount in the five-digit range

According to the police, the “least” manipulation was a “turn back” by 60,000 kilometers.

The amount of damage is in the five-digit range.

However, the duo has not yet made a confession – the two have been reported to the public prosecutor's office on suspicion of commercial fraud and forgery.

In order not to fall for speedometer fraudsters, the ADAC advises, among other things, to check repair invoices and TÜV reports on used cars before you buy them.

It may also be worth contacting the previous owner of the car and asking what mileage the vehicle was sold with.

In addition, a professional used car check is not harmful, especially for buyers who are less familiar with cars.

Although it costs, it gives additional security before purchasing a disaster vehicle.
